PAUSE: Analysis

Why does sound X sound the way it does?
And what's the difference between sound X and sound Y?

One of the great benefits of digital audio is the array of software available to graphically represent sound. If you're working on a mix and have a particular issue which you can't quite identify or if you're attempting to repair a track, it may help to analyse the sound visually.

Even if you don't have any "particular issues" with your audio, there's something curiously pleasing and satisfying in being able to see what you hear.

This section covers:

  • Analysis Tools: A look at some of the best free analysis applications and plugins.
  • Analysis Archive: Practical applications of audio analysis.
  • Other Sections (to be added as we go): Will feature articles, research, listening test findings and anything else of a marginally technical nature that we find interesting enough to share with you.

All software recommended is freeware (unless otherwise stated) and has been thoroughly tested by us. The majority of it, many of us use on a regular basis and is highly recommended.
