MUSIC LIBRARIES/DATABASES: Tested Freeware

We were looking for a clean, fast and well designed easy to use Audio Database / Library. We were not interested in a one-stop-shop-do-everything-confusing-and-bloated-nightmare audio "solution".

CRITERIA

  • A very good database and audio library.
  • Must be easy to use and intuitive with a clear and well designed interface.
  • Must be fast and light on system resources.
  • Must be able to backup settings and library / database.
  • Must be able to synchronise directories and auto update the database quickly on start-up and remove non-existent entries.
  • Mustn't require the installation of any other software (i.e. .NET framework or JAVA) to run.
  • Mustn't be promoting some commercial service or serve as a marketing tool.
  • No adware or spyware (obviously)
  • Not interested in any online lookup services.
  • Tagging should be possible but not essential (tagging is best done by tagging software).
  • Good playlist management and creation - dynamic playlists a plus.
  • Drag and drop to other applications.
  • Must be able to recognise, play and manage: ACC, OGG, MPC, MP3, FLAC, WavPack, Wav
  • Good sound quality.
  • Should be able to record a play history.
  • Export to Excel, CSV, HTML a plus.
  • If setup and configuration are time consuming the time spent must be rewarded by performance and utility and thus future time-saving.
