Background
When we were looking at extension rods that were compatible with Novoflex's Micropod mini-tripod base (the ideal base for our ultralight modular tripod, you can read more about the tripod here) the obvious choice was Novoflex's own (expensive) 15cm extension rod. However, after integrating Feichao's Dual Cubic Mount we not only gained a lot of potential function, we also gained a little extra weight and about 5cm of height. To shed the extra grams we looked for a shorter alternative and found Camvate's 10cm extension rod. Aside from being 5cm shorter it's practically identical in terms of machining and overall quality.
The Camvate Extension Rod
Camvate are a top-tier manufacturer of high quality studio accessories, making all sorts of rods, rails, plates and cages for the film and photographic industry (very similar to one of their main competitors SmallRig).
The Camvate rod is made from a single piece of CNC machined aluminium alloy and weighs just 21g. It has a 1/4"-20 female thread at one end and a 1/4"20 male screw at the other and thus two or more can be screwed together in series. For our purposes we use just the one, to maximise stability along the tripod column and to keep weight to an absolute minimum.
Extras
We supply a few accessories with each rod:
- One 3cm x 5cm strip of spinnaker tape (a durable ripstop nylon adhesive tape to increase grip to aid unscrewing the rod in the field without the need for tools and to protect the rod if tools like pliers are used)
- Two ultra-thin M6 steel washers and a single nitrile rubber o-ring. The o-ring goes between the two washers on the male screw of the rod. When the rod is screwed into a mount like Feichao's Dual Cubic this enables the rod to be under or over-tightened so that components attached to the mount (like Leg #4) can be aligned with the legs of the tripod base.
