SOFTWARE SUMMARY

Writing good recording, editing, mixing and mastering software is clearly a complex art judging by the dearth of quality freeware solutions.

There is one piece of software we cannot praise highly enough, and that is Reaper. Reaper is an un-crippled, un-expiring shareware application for Windows; Cockos (Reaper's creators) provide the full version for free, forever. However we strongly recommend, if you can afford to do so, paying for it, as it's not that much money (at the time of writing a non-commercial license is only $40, approx £20). When considering the alternatives (from the excellent Adobe Audition at £250 - £300 to the relatively weak, yet easily the best freeware contender, Audacity), it becomes plain that Cockos are well worth supporting; making high quality production easily affordable.

If you have the money, we recommend purchasing both Reaper, for mixing and mastering, and Adobe Audition (or if you can get hold of a copy of Audition's predecessor, Cool Edit Pro, all the better) for recording and editing. Reaper allows for external editors, so a simple double click on a track in Reaper will launch it in an application like Cool Edit.

If you have no money, then use Reaper and put up with the purchase reminder screen that delays use of the product for 6 seconds.

If you want a purely freeware alternative then the best is the open source Audacity, though it doesn't compare well to Reaper, Adobe Audition or Cool Edit Pro.
