AUDIO REPAIR SERVICE

We rarely encounter audio on vinyl or magnetic tape in pristine condition; often LPs click, crackle and pop along; occasionally causing the stylus to jump or get stuck in a groove; tapes hiss (because of their granular magnetic nature) and suffer from distortion and flutter caused by variations in tape speed.

Giant Pygmy Audio offers standalone repairs (see/hear an example) for damaged digital and analog audio (vinyl and tape are transferred to 32bit digital audio files, and then repaired). The repair service is primarily an add-on to our audio transfer service.

The transfer service is just that; we transfer audio from analog source to digital destination in whatever condition it comes. Damaged audio is encoded along with undamaged and tagged as either "Repairable" or "Irreparable" (e.g. where a scratch causes the stylus to jump, leaving part of the track missing - we cannot put back what is not there).

The repair service will only attempt to repair what is, in our estimation, repairable.

Repairs include:

  • Filter low frequency noise if necessary (20 - 30 Hz and below depending on the audio)
  • Manually remove obvious clicks & pops
  • May run a very light click pass if really necessary
  • Remove any remaining clicks manually (see an example)
  • Reduce noise in low level sections if necessary
  • Hiss reduction if requested (and if this can be achieved without perceptible attenuation)
  • If there are jumps or major scratches it may be possible to restore these (if we feel we can't we'll let the client know in advance and will not attempt the repair)

This service is charged per track and the cost depends upon the extent of the damage.
